What does it mean to be living in devotion?
I found myself answering this question to myself after watching my partner, Todd, do an improvisational performance piece on his Native American Flute at our Community Choir performance last Friday.
Our Community Choir practiced every week for 2 terms to pull together a beautiful collection of songs. Todd just walked up on stage with zero preparation and played his flute.
His performance was captivating and the entire audience willingly traveled into the soundscape he painted. We were all in the spell of someone who has finessed his craft, the music channelling through him as he became a willing conduit of that craft. His performance looked effortless.
And yet, there's always a backstory that paints out the picture more fully, asking; where does this effortlessness spring from? Such a backstory illuminates a deep seated yearning; that created a desire and a willingness to push through limitations; which in turn created a readiness to step into an apprenticeship to meet and master that yearning.
Todd's fluting story is no exception. It started 15 years ago in South Korea and was an orchestra of synchronicities and trust that propelled him deeper and deeper into the craft of flute playing, and subsequently flute making.
From the outside, it looked like fortune was favouring this young man's journey.
From the outside, this young man met every challenge and obstacle with fortitude and tenaciousness.
But closer to the heart of it was a desire and dedication to creating soul-filled music and to flow with the emergent energies of time and space.
This resides in the field of Devotion.
Devotion is a super-power for our creative efforts.
